- Abstract
【Objective】 To explore the trade influencing factors and trade potential of China’s export of agricultural products to ASEAN countries, and to provide theoretical basis for developing China-ASEAN agricultural trade relations. 【Method】 Based on the data from the United Nations COMTRADE trade database, the World Bank database and CEPⅡ database from 2012 to 2016, the extended gravity model was used to conduct empirical analysis on the influencing factors and trade potential of agricultural products between China and ASEAN countries. According to the customs code(HS code), agricultural products were divided into four categories to calculate the differences in the trade of different categories of agricultural products, so as to explore the current situation and existing problems of China-ASEAN agricultural products trade. 【Result】 The distance between China and ASEAN countries, the population size and per capita arable land of the importing countries, and whether or not to join the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area all had significant impact on China-ASEAN agricultural products trade. From the export point of view, China exports agricultural products to ASEAN were in normal trade category. However, the export trade potential of different types of agricultural products varied greatly, with insufficient trade in animal products, animal and vegetable oils and fats, excessive trade in plant products, and normal trade in food, beverage and tobacco. From the import point of view, trade with Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos was insufficient, while normal trade with other countries. The trade potential value of different types of agricultural products was highly differentiated among countries. For example, China’s import of animal products from Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand were insufficient, and normal trade was conducted with other countries. 【Suggestion】 Following suggestions are proposed:continue to develop China’s agricultural industry, improve the output value of agricultural products, increase China’s agricultural export competitiveness;adjust the trade relations with ASEAN according to the differences in trade potential of each country, deepen the trade with countries with insufficient trade, and maintain the level with normal trading countries. In particular, different policies should be formulated for different types of agricultural products. For example, if the trade in plant products is excessive, the export should be appropriately reduced.
