- Authors
Skinner, Christopher
- Abstract
AUKUS is an agreement among Australia, Britain and the United States to enable Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines (Pillar 1) and to undertake research and development of novel defence technologies (Pillar 2). This paper describes the AUKUS tripartite relationship; outlines the eight AUKUS Pillar 2 technology and col laboration initiatives; and looks in detail at the planning for Australia's acquisition of nuclear-powered attack submarines under AUKUS Pillar 1. Strategic implications for Australia and the Indo-Pacific region are noted and the author concludes that AUKUS will provide a foundation for enhanced national and regional security.
