The article discusses a study on special collections job advertisements to find out the position's core qualifications and duties in relation the latest set of core competencies identified by the Rare Book and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). It gathers a composite image of opportunities available to new graduates and the qualifications and competencies demanded by employers. Thirty nine special collection jobs were taken from the archives of the LIBJOBS electronic mail discussion list provided by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA). It suggests a survey of hiring institutions for outcomes to determine how closely the qualifications of successful candidates matched those in the advertised job description.
