- Abstract
The trend report "Technical Chemistry 2024" addresses the most important goals and developments in technical chemistry. The circularity of material flows, sustainability, and resource and energy security have been important goals for years. The chemical industry plays a strategically important role in economic autonomy and democratic structures. The transformation of the chemical industry is embedded in the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. Diversification into new products and markets, scalability, and digitization are important aspects for future development. Digitization is essential for developing future scenarios and finding solutions. The article deals with virtual investigations and visualizations as a means of accepting transformation-related changes. An example of a technical transformation is the transition to a hydrogen economy. Obstacles to transformation include economic production, infrastructure adaptation, and legal framework conditions. In order to overcome these obstacles, business and politics must take action. The article also mentions the efficiency improvement in distillation processes through diversification and the use of heat pumps and dividing wall columns. Digital tools such as process flow simulations and artificial intelligence are used to optimize and operate rectification processes. Heterogeneous catalysts play an important role in the chemical industry and are increasingly being multifunctionalized to meet the requirements of load flexibility, intensification, and decentralization. The production and characterization of these catalysts takes place on different scales, from nano- to millimeters. There are many digital tools for heterogeneous catalytic systems that are constantly being developed. Work is being done in reaction engineering to utilize neural networks to describe kinetic models. There are also efforts to network databases and collaborate in collaborative databases. However, further research is required for the use of modern digital techniques in reaction engineering.
