- Title
Using Digital Badges to Enhance First‐Year Information Literacy: A Case Study.

- Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, librarians at a university had to adapt their First Year Experience program to remote instruction. They created a Canvas course called First Year Experience with Libraries, which included modules on library orientation, finding scholarly articles, academic integrity, algorithm literacy, and research planning. To communicate student scores to instructors, they integrated a system called Badgr, which awarded students who completed modules with digital badges. These badges allowed students to provide proof of library competency to their instructors and could be shared on websites or social media. The use of badges increased student engagement and demonstrated proficiency in information literacy skills. Other libraries have also found success with micro-credentials like badges in their information literacy programs. The pilot program at this university awarded 800 badges to students and improved assessment of student learning. However, there were challenges in tracking data and maintaining instructor engagement. Lessons learned from this project include addressing stakeholder expectations and using backward design philosophy to determine learning objectives for asynchronous library instruction.
