HOW TO BE A STUFFED ANIMAL.
- Authors
Saunders, Frances Stonor
- Abstract
The author examines the history and meaning of taxidermy in American museums. Details of the July 13, 1865 fire that destroyed P.T. Barnum's American museum in Manhattan in New York City are presented. Barnum decided to have Jumbo, an African bush elephant, stuffed and mounted by taxidermist Carl Akeley. An overview of some taxidermy projects handled by Akeley is provided. Akeley risked his own life to acquire the perfect specimen and publicized his adventures.
