- Abstract
This article focuses on the European "City 2030" project, a combined undertaking taking place on the German-Polish border between the cities of Görlitz (Germany) and Zgorzelec (Poland). Through cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, community services, and land development, the project aims at the creation of common transit, communal, cultural, scientific, economic and sport organizations, thus eliminating redundancy and reducing costs in both cities. Traced is the history of the region from 1945-1989, and noted are conceptions aimed at closer cooperation between Görlitz and Zgorzelec (most notably, the 1997 European competition that united the two communities in the "City 2030" project). Traced, too, are the cities' common development plans. The author ends with assessments of the project circa 2008.
