- Abstract
This article is a review of the book, “Textile Production in Czech lands in the 13th through 15th centuries: Assessing Textile Production Based on Archeological Finds,” written by Helena Brezinova and published in Prague-Brno (Czech Republic) in 2007. The work, an expansion of research found in the author’s doctoral dissertation, examines textile production in 13th- to 15th-century Bohemia, Moravia, and Czech Silesia based upon archeological evidence (found in digs throughout Central Europe) of woven materials and tools. The book begins with an introduction that highlights the importance of archeology, iconography, written sources, and ethnography in the study of historical textile products. Next, it provides a catalog of 285 fragments/remains of textile products (from 43 sites) and the tools used during the period. Remaining chapters focus upon textile production in the late-Medieval period and note the structure/organization of the manufacture, the importation of textiles, the materials, tools and techniques/technologies that were utilized, and the ultimate uses of the products. Of particular interest, are the author’s experiments, which debunk past speculations/conjectures as to the precise utilization of some tools associated with medieval-era weaving and textile production.
