- Authors
Jenkins, Susan
- Abstract
The article examines the relationship between Sir Robert Walpole, who is generally regarded as having been the first British prime minister, and James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos, and considers what information this provides on the politics of art collecting in England in the period 1700-1750. Similarities between the backgrounds and collecting patterns of both men are discussed. They contemporaneously achieved riches and acclaim and their newly elevated status led them to collect works of art and build important new estates. Brydges made several attempts to buy himself favour with Walpole through the gift of works of art. Their collections were formed to furnish their great country houses of Cannons and Houghton Hall, respectively, and to support their claims to gentlemanly status.
