- Authors
Cowley, Robert L. S.
- Abstract
The article discusses works of painter William Hogarth and his painting A Harlot's Progress. Topics include determinism and freedom of will in Hogarth's A Harlot's Progress; how the laces of Hogarth's young woman's bodice are tied with another bow discernible under her right hand; and in terms of social criticism Hogarth implies that the Church of England, as represented by the curate on his horse, is too bound up in its own affairs and disputes to be of use to vulnerable women.
