- Abstract
The article explores the phrase "conversation piece" beginning with the expression of engraver George Vertue, who used the phrase to describe a portrait by Gawen Hamilton of the family of Earl Thomas Wentworth. The article discusses the root of the phrase in several languages including Italian, Dutch/Flemish and French. The author goes on to discuss the usage of the term to describe both a genre and portrait.
