- Abstract
The article presents a profile and biography of the 19th century African American actor Ira Aldridge, particularly in regards to his career and life in New York City during the 1820s. Aldridge's education at the African Free School is discussed in depth along with his entrance into the theatrical profession shortly after his graduation. Aldridge's successful career is chronicled, highlighting his struggles with racial violence against his person and class. The influence of the New York theater life on his own career and acting techniques is also discussed.
