- Abstract
The article discusses two letters written in Old Yiddish used in a court case involving blood libel led by Pope Sixtus IV against Jews in Trent, Italy in 1475. The author suggests that they are the oldest known letters written in Old Yiddish and discusses the historical context and language of the letters. Specific topics include the use of Hebrew words in the letters, the Catholic priest Paolo da Novara and his possession of the letters, and Ashkenazic Jews in northern Italy.
