- Authors
Novick, Tzvi
- Abstract
The article establishes a comparison between the meaning of "four or five" with regards to Mishnah's terminology and with that of the Tosefta. With the insights of pragmatics, the author examines the usage of phrase "four or five," with the meaning "a few," in the Tosefta and the Mishnah. The phrase, accordingly, occurs in both corpora; however, with different nuances. The differences provide new evidence for the claim that the Mishna is a more precisely crafted legal work. In conclusion, the author offers corroborative evidence form the usage of other phrases.
