- Title
The Ambiguity of "Paradise Lost" and Contemporary Critical Theory.
- Authors
Hyman, Lawrence W.
- Abstract
Poetry criticism on ambiguity, author intention, and reader response relating to the epic poem "Paradise Lost" by John Milton is presented. The author cites Milton scholar William Empson's comment on semantics in the poem, the roles of God and Satan in the poem, and the Christian and classical traditions of the 17th century. The orthodox perspective of the narrator is considered alongside the moral paradox created by the poem.
