Editor's note: This article is an extended reading and interpretation of the short story, "Gilgul," by Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi (1932–2009), one of the most influential Jewish historians of the twentieth century. The story, reproduced in the first section, appeared posthumously in The New Yorker Magazine August 15 & 22, 2011, 76–83. The second section is a commentary and interpretation of "Gilgul" by Peter Ben Kussell, PhD. Kussell was an undergraduate student in Yershalmi's course on modern Jewish history at Harvard in 1966–67.1
