- Authors
Walinski-Kiehl, Robert
- Abstract
The article demonstrates the Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft's (DEFA) 1956 production of "Thomas Müntzer," which constitutes a relevant historical source in exploring the connections between history, politics, and culture in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). It focuses on the examination of the film and its pre-production arrangements, which brings some political priorities and cultural concerns of the communist authorities. The film has provided the East German rulers with an ideal vehicle focusing on the desire in the GDR for some form of German national reunification. However, the film is one of the occasion when the East German dictatorship demonstrated a serious lack of understanding of its ordinary citizens.
