- Abstract
The document is a response from the editors of a book on "spatial history" to reviewers' comments. The editors acknowledge that "spatial history" is an emerging field that is less established compared to other historical fields. They mention a few institutions and initiatives that focus on spatial history, such as the Stanford-based "Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis" and the University of Lancaster's "Digital Humanities Centre." The editors argue that spatial history has the potential to create new knowledge, facilitate interdisciplinary connections, and draw inspiration from neighboring disciplines. They also discuss the intellectual lineage of spatial history, including its roots in the work of Paul Carter, Fredric Jameson, and Edward Soja, as well as its manifestation in different national and disciplinary contexts. The editors acknowledge the Western European and North American bias in the field and suggest the need for a more diverse and inclusive perspective in spatial history research.
