- Abstract
Dental care has been identified and continues to be recognized as one the greatest unmet health need facing person with disabilities. The lack of access to oral health is multifactorial, but one of the major factors that must be acknowledged is the level of dental fear or anxiety that deters this population to cooperate for dental care. One aspect is within the control of dentist that is environment. By doing modifications in environment may reduce the level of anxiety. It is widely accepted that unfamiliarity can instill anxiety, stress, and fear. By considering all five senses, the aim is to create a sense of familiarity in the environment to reduce the anxiety and fear. A Snoezelen can be defined as multisensory-adapted environment coupled with patient-centered therapy. A Snoezelen environment may include having a partially lit rooms with special lighting effects, relaxing music, vibration, or aromas. A modified sensory environment such as Snoezelen can result in a subject's attention being focused intently on the positive stimuli, causing an altered state with a concomitant reduction in awareness of discomforting/nocuous stimuli. A calming multisensory environment has the promise to reduce fear and anxiety, which improves the overall experience and cooperation of the individual.
