- Abstract
A cuticle was found for the first time on the surface of the epidermis of the cotyledon of L., and the ultrastructure of the cuticle was established as being narrow and lamellate. The major ultrastructural features of the previously undescribed testa were the layers of crushed, lignified cells in the endosperm layer, and an associated, electron-dense complex at the interface. Changes in the ultrastructure of the outer lamella of the cuticle, the sub-epidermal layer of the cotyledon and the lining complex of the testa were observed after removal of the testa by industrial processing. The basic ultrastructure of the endosperm layer of the testa and the inner lamella of the cuticle were found to be least affected by the processing.
