- Abstract
This article examines the lack of healthcare access in rural and underserved communities in the United States, specifically in the field of radiation therapy. It highlights the disparities in healthcare resources between rural and urban areas, including a shortage of physicians and treatment centers in rural areas. The article suggests that these disparities may lead to poorer cancer treatment outcomes for residents of rural areas compared to non-rural areas. The authors emphasize the need for further research to understand the impact of limited radiation oncology resources on treatment outcomes in rural areas. Additionally, the article discusses the shortage of Qualified Medical Radiation Therapy Physicists (QMPs) and its impact on cancer therapy and diagnostic imaging. The authors propose solutions such as gathering data on filling positions in different regions, increasing residency program positions, and recruiting candidates from underserved areas. They stress the importance of addressing access to care in rural America and underserved populations, and call for prompt action to identify and address shortages of medical physicists in all communities.
