- Abstract
The article provides an overview of South Dakota's 20th-century political history, which the author notes was largely dominated by the state's Republican Party. More specifically, the author identifies eleven turning points in the state's political history and explains alternative scenarios if these events had not occurred. Examples of such events include the rise of progressivism in the early 20th century, the Republican government's suppression of the Nonpartisan League (NPL), and economic growth in the post-World War II era. The author also examines the impact of the Cold War on politics, anti-Communism in the 1930s, and Governor Richard F. Kneip's inability to establish an income tax.
