- Abstract
The article discusses the 1923 Nobel Prize for the discovery of insulin and provides a historical perspective on the events surrounding the award. The laureates, Frederick G Banting and John J R Macleod, were unable to attend the ceremony, leading to internal and external dissatisfaction with the choice of laureates. The article also summarizes the development of knowledge on diabetes until the 1920s and evaluates the Nobel activities at the Karolinska Institutet. Additionally, it reviews the later advances in diabetes treatment that were made possible by the discovery of insulin.
