- Title
Making the Invisible Engineer Visible.
- Abstract
The article explores the role of the company E. I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co. (DuPont) in shaping the field of nuclear engineering and promoting its equal recognition with nuclear sciences such as nuclear physics. Particular focus is given to the relationship between scientific and engineering cultures at DuPont's facilities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Hanford, Washington, and Savannah River, South Carolina. According to the author, DuPont's contracted production of the nuclear chain reactors forced it to adapt to and foster nuclear engineering. It is suggested that the changes in the company illustrated larger changes in attitudes towards nuclear-energy specialists. Topics discussed include atomic piles, physicists, and hierarchies within DuPont.
