- Title
Cinethetic Racism: White Redemption and Black Stereotypes in "Magical Negro" Films.
- Authors
Hughey, Matthew W.
- Abstract
The article discusses representations of African Americans in U.S. motion pictures. The author focuses on "magical negro" films which depict lower-class, uneducated, magical black characters who influence uncultured, disheveled white characters into becoming competent. Films such as "The Family Man," "The Green Mile," and "Bruce Almighty" are analyzed in order to suggest a cinematic racism that combines overt manifestations of racial cooperation and egalitarianism with latent expressions of white normativity and anti-black stereotypes. Other topics include the significance of race, racialized fantasy, and the attitudes of mainstream audiences.
