- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between intraocular and intracranial pressure in children with severe head injury and intraocular hypertension; that is, intraocular pressure ≥ 20 mmHg, with intracranial hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional and analytical study to obtain the correlation between intraocular and opening intracranial pressure and then between intracranial and intraocular hypertension. Inclusion criteria: children with severe cranioencephalic trauma admitted to the emergency room with indication of intracranial catheter for intracranial pressure measurement. Exclusion criteria: patients with ophthalmic injurydisease, glaucoma, or brain death. Intraocular pressure was measured in both eyes with an electronic tonometer before placement of the intracranial pressure catheter. Correlation was estimated with Spearman's Rho. RESULTS: Eighteen children were included and correlation of right eye intraocular pressure with opening intracranial pressure was found in 96.1% (p < 0.001) and left eye intraocular pressure, 98.6% (p < 0.001); between intracranial hypertension and intraocular hypertension the correlation was 96.4%. CONCLUSIONS: Intraocular pressure had a linear, strong, significant and directly proportional correlation with respect to intracranial pressure in children with severe head injury as well as between intracranial hypertension and intraocular hypertension. Measurement of intraocular pressure in the emergency room proved to be a useful tool in the initial evaluation and diagnosis of intracranial hypertension.
