- Abstract
The essay discusses the act of mourning in French "tragedies en musique," a type of Baroque opera. The author suggests that mourning is a collective activity in French opera and focuses on the idea of choral lament in tragic opera in the late 17th and 18th centuries. The author explores the history of public mourning in France and focuses on operas including the 1737 opera "Castor et Pollux" by Jean-Philippe Rameau, the 1674 opera "Alceste" by Jean-Baptiste Lully, and the 1676 opera "Atys" by Lully.
