- Title
A Social Skills framing Approach to the Interpersonal Problems of Learning Disabled Children.
- Authors
Hummel, Jeffrey W.
- Abstract
The article reports on the social and emotional development of children with learning disabilities. It discusses learning disability arising from ineffective communication skills, and negative expectations and overgeneralization causing parental frustrations. It emphasizes the need for mental health professionals to understand parent and child behavior. It also stresses that social skills are more important than academic skills for mainstreaming of the learning disabled. Information on the negative consequences of the learning disabled children's inability to have a conversation with peers, and their failure to respond to adults, is also provided. It suggests that comprehensive programs for learning disabled adolescents should include activities to improve social perception.
