- Abstract
Backround: Pamela Reed’s theory of Self-Transcendence is important as it enables nurses to discover their own potential and the potential of the individuals they care for. Learning the theory by nurses is necessary for them to integrate the theory into their personal and professional lives by transforming knowledge into skills. Movies are a useful teaching tool in teaching abstract concepts by concretizing. Objectives: The study aims to analyze the movie Soul Surfer within the framework of the theory of Self-Transcendence and its basic concepts, and thus to evaluate it as a concrete learning material that will enable better assimilation of the theory. Methods: The film analyzed with the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative analysis methods. It watched three times in total, the scenes containing the basic concepts of the theory were noted, and the data were created by making instructive inferences for analysis. Reporting of data was done by COREQ. Resutls: 9 scenes are thought to be suitable for explaining the basic concepts of the theory; 2 scenes were associated with the concepts of vulnerability, 5 scenes with self-transcendence, and 2 scenes with well-being. In order to embody the concepts more easily, the dialogues in the scenes are also included under the headings. Conclusion: It was thought that the theory of Self-Transcendence could be a guide for nurses and nursing students, and the movie Soul Surfer had enough elements to make sense of the theory. The movie can be a useful material for the adoption of the theory by nurses.
