The article presents a study which investigates a temporal sequence of excitation after inhibition and then excitation of excitatory cortical neurons. The behavioural conditions under which vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) neurons are recruited is also mentioned. It suggests that vibrissal motor cortex (vM1) which is caused by whisking recruits VIP interneurons, inhibit somatostatin (SOM) interneurons.
