- Abstract
We agree with Dr. Guido Giusti that stone-free rates may be different using modalities other than flexible ureteroscopy for all types of renal stones. A recent long-term study from our center further detailed the correlation between residual stone fragments and surgical recurrence, emphasizing the value of stone-free rate on long-term outcomes for our stone patients.[1] As such, we are precisely aware of the significance of residual fragments on surgical recurrence based on our retrospective report. We are not as certain of the significance of residual or asymptomatic stone fragments on a patient's quality of life, a question we believe is ultimately worth asking.[2],[3] Giusti questions the correlation of intraoperative retrograde pyelogram and coronal CT (an imaging modality more commonly available preoperatively), and we concur this may be a valid concern.
