- Abstract
Just like Stanislav Krakov, Dušan Vasiljev, Dragiša Vasić and Miloš Crnjanski, Rastko Petrović took an active part in the First World War and, even though he was nowhere close to the battlefront, he retreated across the Albanian mountains during the winter of 1915/1916, coming very close to death on a number of occasions. Determined to reach freedom, he goes abroad after the retreat and continues his life as a civilian, never returning to war. This does not mean his war experience has left no trace on his psyche, his understanding of himself and the value of human life - on the contrary, even though experience of war does not have a primary place in his work, Petrović was haunted by the images he saw during the Albanian retreat for the rest of his life, and he never gave up on introducing them into his writing. This is why the echoes of war and the world after the armistice can be seen in his first pieces of writing, the novel Burleska gospodina Peruna boga groma and his collection of poems Otkrovenje, only to become stronger in his epic poem "Veliki drug" and novel Sa silama nemerljivim, culminating in his masterpiece, the novel Dan šesti (partially translated into English as The Sixth Day). However, it has taken almost half a century for his memories of Albania to reach readers through that last novel, while the publication of that manuscript was intriguing and paradigmatic of the time between the two World Wars and the culture of censorship of certain authors. Dan šesti proves the quality of Petrović's writing, but also provides the opportunity to cast a new view on war disasters, a view that is different from most works that thematize this event, simultaneously showcasing the personal drama of an individual, the collective tragedy of an entire nation, the process of dehumanization of men in war, as well as an existential tale about surviving the worst conditions, which is why all these aspects of the novel are the focus of this paper.
