- Abstract
This article discusses the potential for aquifer contamination from the plant growth retardant paclobutrazol (PBZ) used in the semiarid northeast region of Brazil. A sandy Yellow Ultisol and clay-rich Vertisol soil were compared on the basis of sorption kinetics for pure and formulated growth retardant. According to the authors, the results of high performance liquid chromatography showed that sorption is dominantly controlled by organic matter. However, some interactions of PBZ with goethite iron oxides were seen in the Ultisol. The sorption parameters indicate a low leachability potential which is different than the actual groundwater situation in Brazil probably due to the organic matter contents.
