- Abstract
An essay is presented on the efforts of the Catholic charity known as the New York Foundling Hospital to transport and place orphaned children with Catholic families on the U.S. Western frontier during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Particular focus is given to the role of such placement programs in promoting Catholic culture in frontier settlements. Details on the program's relationship to similar Protestant child-saving efforts are also presented.
