- Abstract
Objective: to report the experience of nursing students in an extension project about playing with the family and the child in the hospital. Method: experience report of three nursing students from a private university, who are part of an Extension project project - "The meaning of playing for the hospitalized child's family: contributions to nursing". The recreational extension activities were carried out in three pediatric wards or in the toy library of a public hospital located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, from July to December 2022, with 13 family members and 13 hospitalized children. Results: the experiences of the nursing students were organized into three thematic axes: playing as a form of distraction for the child and family in the hospital; playing as nursing care; the importance of the toy library from the perspective of the family member. Final Considerations: the extension project about playing with the family and their child in the hospital allowed the nursing students to understand the benefits of playing for the child and family, as well as to see this activity as nursing care. In addition, in the interaction with family members, they come to understand the importance of the toy library within the hospital setting.
