- Abstract
This article focuses on the treatment of elevated cholesterol in elderly patients. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors have been shown to reduce all-cause mortality in older people with coronary heart disease (CHD) and elevated cholesterol levels. Studies have demonstrated a decrease in all-cause mortality in elderly patients with CHD by treating cholesterol levels with pravastatin or simvastatin. The National Cholesterol Education Program lends its support for statin treatment of elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in selected men and women.
