- Title
THE ARAUCARIA FORESTS OF NEW GUINEA AND THEIR REGENERATIVE CAPACITY.
- Authors
Havel, J. J.
- Abstract
The article examines two theories advanced on the mode of regeneration of Araucaria in the light of ecological studies made in New Guinea. The first theory postulates that they are living fossils dependent for their regeneration on natural catastrophes. The second theory states that Araucaria are integral components of the forest whose regeneration patterns are similar to those of their angiosperm associates. The two species of Araucaria, Araucaria hunsteinii and Araucaria cunninghamii, occur over a wide latitudinal and altitudinal range, chiefly as emergents over several broad-leaf forest types.
