- Abstract
Aim: To explore whether the education component in a pulmonary rehabilitation programme (PRP) influences health outcomes for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Methodology: An integrative review of literature was employed in the study to allow for narrative integration of results from qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods articles. Findings: The research findings from 11 reviewed articles highlighted the following concepts: "Knowledge of the disease", "knowledge as key to self-management" (with sub-concepts "management of symptoms" and "management of psychosocial symptoms") and "the relationship between knowledge and education". Discussion: Insufficient evidence exists about the importance of education in PRPs. Therefore, health practitioners providing PRPs must consider, as standard practice, evaluating the educational component to highlight evidence of its significance. Conclusion: The educational component of PRPs for people with COPD is not currently supported by sufficient evidence showing its influence on health outcomes. Robust research is required to investigate the influence of the educational component of PRPs in any setting and to test a suitable measurement tool on people with COPD in New Zealand. Further research is required to evaluate the teaching methods currently being used in any PRP settings where cultural diversity is prominent in New Zealand. This should investigate the relevance of the topics being covered in the current education component from the patient's perspective, and explore the involvement of cultural leaders/peer groups in the delivery of education.
