- Abstract
The study´s general objective is to understand, from a gender perspective, the meaning that5 nurses attribute to their experiences as women and professionals in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, as oral narratives of their life stories. Exploratory research with a qualitative approach, based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of oral history and gender perspective. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and included the participation of seven nurses, working in public services in the municipality of São Caetano do Sul. The narratives were recorded, transcribed and analyzed to apprehend the meanings, interpret and discuss from the gender category. Based on the interpretation, two categories were constructed: gender stereotypes and inequalities in the construction of nurses' identity; and the Covid-19 pandemic enhancing gender contradictions in nurses' reality. Among the meanings, stood out: routine overload as a woman and a nursing professional, social exclusion and prejudice, death and suffering of patients in their daily work. It is hoped that the public debate on the social relevance of Brazilian nursing can be translated into the achievement of rights that enable material conditions for the exercise of the profession with social justice and equity.
