- Abstract
The crisis of capitalism, with its strong focus on intangible financial products, is currently counteracted by cultural and literary products that seem to return to the materiality of nature. The poetry of Xavier Queipo can be considered a forerunner in this sense, as it has long lent itself to eco-critical readings. His books Nos dominios de Leviatán (In the Domains of Leviathan) (2001) and Glosarios (Glossaries) (2004) grant attention emphatically to natural domains, particularly to the animal kingdom and the sea world, in a constant drive to map out their richness with a precision and rigour that Martín Veiga has described as characteristic of 'inventary poems'. From a position that challenges the artificial separation between science and the humanities, Queipo's poetic voice charts the opulence and diversity of nature, almost in biblical or epiphanic terms. The sea in particular becomes at once a symbol of promiscuous celebration that knows no boundaries or territorial divisions and the space of a linguistic abyss and ambiguity. These traits place Queipo's poetry in the lineage of modernity, from Baudelaire to the avant-garde.
