- Abstract
Objective: This study seeks to assess public awareness levels regarding clinical trials (CTs), including understanding of their conception, pros and cons, and willingness to participate. Furthermore, it aims to compare regional differences in responses. Methods: The public survey was conducted between January and April in 2023. The questionnaire covered socioeconomic information and existing knowledge and beliefs about CTs. Results: Within the final study population of 500 participants, 229 individuals (45.8%) living in metropolitan areas were categorized as the metropolitan group, while the remaining participants were classified as the non-metropolitan group. Although the metropolitan group displayed a tendency to believe that they were more well-informed about CTs, no notable disparity was observed when assessing the knowledge of both groups about CTs. The non-metropolitan population exhibited a greater willingness to participate in CTs compared to the metropolitan population. The predominant factor attributed to regional inequality was the disparity in the number of CTs conducted between tertiary hospitals in the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas. Thus, there was a consensus in responses regarding the crucial imperative of achieving regional equality in CTs, emphasizing the necessity for increased governmental efforts to address this imbalance. Conclusion: The majority of participants concurred that regional inequality hindered CT participation. Although individuals in non-metropolitan areas expressed greater willingness to engage in CTs, limited opportunities stemmed from fewer conducted trials, inadequate public information, and resource shortages in rural areas. To rectify this, the government must intensify its efforts to attain regional CT equality.
