- Abstract
This paper examined the use of trade policy in Botswana as one of the strategies of economic diversification. The economy of Botswana is characterised by, dependency on a single primary commodity for its revenue, lack of diversification, inadequate infrastructure and a small domestic market. The country can focus on those constraints that have the potential of enhancing diversification such as infrastructure, business, financial and services sector. Botswana's garment and textile products have duty and quota free entrance to the EU. It can export to the main regional markets with no duty and restrictions. Under AGOA Botswana can buy fabric and ship the products to the US duty free. Being part of these regional and international organizations is valuable for Botswana. Countries in Sub Saharan Africa like Botswana have the potential to diversify their export base. This can be through diversifying within the primary sector itself. They can further undertake natural resource based exportĂșoriented industrialization. This applies to the case of Botswana in that government decided to initiate the Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) to sort, market and distribute aggregated diamonds.
