- Abstract
This article provides an overview of central respiratory chemoreception and its role in maintaining breathing and regulating CO2 and H+ levels in the body. It explores different areas of the brain that are involved in chemosensitivity and discusses the criteria for identifying central respiratory chemoreceptors. The article emphasizes the need for further research to fully understand the complex mechanisms of respiratory chemoreception in both healthy individuals and those with respiratory disorders. Additionally, the article discusses the chemosensitivity of Phox2b-expressing retrotrapezoid neurons and their interaction with 5-HT neurons, providing evidence for this interaction and highlighting its importance in respiratory control. This information may be valuable for researchers studying respiratory control and related conditions.
