The article explores Austrian art historian Aloïs Riegl's close readings of minor group portraits, culminating in Dutch artist Rembrandt's painting "De Staalmeesters." Topics discussed include Riegl's development of Dutch group portraits based on internal versus external unity, Rembrandt's process of composition in the painting and the Vienna schooling Dutch art scholarship. Also highlighted is the evaluation of Riegl in the context of art historiography.
