- Abstract
Research on the conservation of the status quo of wooden stairs from the fire protection perspective in the Berlin building law Within the refurbishment of existing buildings, planners often need to decide which legal basis is valid for the relevant building or structural component under consideration. Not necessarily these buildings do always require a classification according to the current building law. The principle procedure described in this article can also be applied to the laws in other German federal states, as well as to different building components. With a focus on wooden stairs this article discusses the aspect of the conservation of the status quo in context of the current Berlin building law. For this purpose, the development in the historic Berlin construction planning and building regulations, as well as the changes in the geographical scope of these regulations, are described in detail. The legality or illegality of wooden stairs are investigated on basis of the building law valid at the time of erection for real cases.
