- Abstract
Because the seeds of orchids present absence of endosperm and low rate of germination in nature and their propagation by division of clumps be slow, the in vitro cultivation has become a technique of spreading routine. Meanwhile, a large number of factors influence the germination and growth in vitro, and despite being a very popular technique, knowledge about the best means for cultivation are still insufficient. In this work, to study the effect of different levels of macronutrients and sucrose on the in vitro growth of Cattleya bowringiana O'Brien. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with five repetitions, a factorial arrangement of two types of formulations of macronutrients in Murashige and Skoog (1962), being a standard concentration complete and another with half of macroelements, and five levels of sucrose (0 ; 15; 30; 45 and 60 g L-1). The data were subjected to analysis of variance and posterior Scott-Knott test, multivariate analysis by Tocher and correlation between the variables. The characteristics assessed six months after the beginning of the experiment were: shoot length; number of shoots per plantlet; number of roots per plantlet, length of the largest root and; fresh matter of seedlings. It was found that the treatment containing concentration complete pattern of the macronutrients of the MS was more efficient for all variables evaluated, with the levels of sucrose that allowed for a better growth of the variables studied was the 30 and 45 g L-1. Thus, it is recommended the use of MS with 100% of the salts and sucrose to 30 g L-1 for the in vitro propagation of Cattleya bowringiana.
