- Abstract
In this paper we explore a subject matter that has been gaining increasing attention in recent years: upward mobility. In particular we focus on university students returning to their milieu of origin. We argue from a practice theory perspective that analysing the processes of “returning” allows gainful insight into the multifaceted, relational and ambivalent character of educational upward mobility. The paper is structured as follows: first, we outline the implications of a practice theory perspective on transitions across the life course; second, we present empirical material drawn from two different qualitative case studies; third, we discuss the significance of the return in the transition process and the different ways of “coming home”. Our findings draw attention to the sites, spaces, scenes and affects involved when climbing the educational ladder and the transformations, tensions and ambivalences unfolding.
