- Abstract
Awareness of the importance of health is regarded as a vital factor that is driving the demand for health insurance. The present study endeavors to examine the awareness of health insurance and its determinants among women in Punjab. In the present study, probit regression is employed to identify the important determinants of awareness of health insurance. The results highlight that a significant proportion of women are aware of health insurance, and probit regression indicates that the significant determinants of awareness of health insurance are education, occupation, marital status and wage loss due to inpatient care and outpatient care. Despite a significant proportion of the population being aware of health insurance, there is very low subscription to health insurance in India. It is recommended that to increase the penetration of health insurance, the government, policymakers and the marketers of health insurance should make people aware of the potential benefits of health insurance policies.
