- Abstract
Introduction: Perimenopause, or menopause transition, begins several years before menopause. It usually starts in woman's 40s but can start in 30s or even earlier. Perimenopause lasts until menopause, the point when the ovaries stop releasing ova. It is important to establish a relationship between occupation, prevalence of stress, and cessation of menstrual cycle, as blood pressure (BP) variability and stress are two significant risk factors for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Aim: This study aims to compare the BP variabilities of perimenopausal working and non-working women of Chennai. Materials and Methods: The BP values of 40 women belonging to the perimenopausal working population (40 years-50 years) and the BP values of 40 women belonging to the perimenopausal non-working population of Chennai were recorded for the assessment of significant variabilities. Results: Seventeen women of the 40 perimenopausal working women and 28 women of the 40 perimenopausal non-working women had normal systolic and diastolic BP (120/80 mmHg). Working perimenopausal women had a wider range of BP variability when compared to non-working perimenopausal women. Conclusion: This study is done to increase awareness among the perimenopausal working women about the contribution of stressful workplace environment which increasing the anxiety caused due to menopause that might eventually lead to hypertension.
