- Abstract
What is a Marian apparition? For Philippe Boutry: it is a sacred event that makes spiritual things visible. It implies that the revelation is manifest and that the senses are solicited. For Father René Laurentin, these are communications with the Beyond, inaccessible to ordinary sensory means, but some witnesses are privileged. The message is above all the restoration of an order in conformity with the divine plan, such as pacifying communities, and the divine world encourages men to convert. Of the 2,400 apparitions, the Catholic Church recognizes only sixteen, and for the modern period only two: from Notre-Dame de Guadalupe in Mexico in 1531, to Notre-Dame du Laus in Provence for the years 1664- 1718. The answer is perhaps to be sought in the concern of Roman institutions to offer reasonable objects for the devotion of the faithful. Philippe Boutry proposes three models of apparitions. First of all, the "medieval" or "traditional" model, where the narrative of the apparition slips into the legendary. Then the "Tridentine" model, which began in the 16th century and continued until the eve of the apparitions of La Salette in 1846; in this second model, devotion took precedence over the seer: the pilgrimage of the Catholic Church community took precedence over the apparition, This process consists in gradually erasing the attestation of the apparition, the account of the witnesses, the apparition as an event, to privilege the sanctuary, the devotion and the miracles. Finally, the "attestatory" model since La Salette: in the positivist era, scientific examinations on sighted people, and on healed people, were multiplied to prove the miraculous nature of the prodigy. The examination of the pattern of apparitions reflects the culture of time.
